The Director of Takoradi Port, under the Ghana Port and Habour Authority - GPHA, Mr. Peter Amoo-Bediako is urging fisher folks and residents of New Takoradi, a fishing community in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis to exhibit the spirit of maintenance culture.
He made this known at the commissioning of a newly constructed GIFA Workshop Facility built and funded by the Takoradi Port which will release stress for fisher folks and the fishing community.
According to him, the workshop building will improve the turnaround time and meet the demands of the fisher folks.
Mr. Peter Amoo-Bediako further indicated that the Takoradi Port had an avowed commitment to position the community as a key growth pole to increase economic activities, ensuring growth and development.
"You can all contribute to maintaining the facility and not rely on the government for assistance", he added.
However, he therefore calls on them to have continuous and effective collaboration with the Port of Takoradi.
Meanwhile, the Western Regional Minister Mr. Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah who graced the commissioning encouraged the fisher folks to get good mechanics who can manage the inshore vessel's engines and also repair outboard motors for canoes.
Notwithstanding, the Western Regional Minister who doubles as MP for Takoradi Constituency emphasizes that getting good mechanics for the facility will pave the way for them to repair outboard motors in the New Takoradi community which can be sold to other countries.
The Secretary of the Sekondi-Takoradi branch of the Ghana Inshore Fishermen Association - GIFA, Mr. Kofi Otoo Eric, mentioned that previously fishermen walked long distances from their current location to "Boat Ase" at odd hours, women cacarriedish in pan from "Boat Ase" to New Takoradi township and also insufficient space to accommodate boats.
He indicated that the facility constructed by Takoradi GPHA has solved major problems for them of which they appreciate the authorities.
However, Mr. Kofi Otoo Eric called on authorities at Takoradi Port to continue supporting them.
