The first railway in Ghana was constructed in 1898 during the British colonialism.
The railway line was built to connect the coastal town of Sekondi-Takoradi to the inland town of Tarkwa in the Western Region.
This 30-mile (approximately 48 km) stretch of railway was primarily constructed to transport minerals, particularly gold, from the rich mining areas in the interior to the coast for export.
