Zebilla: Preparations Towards A 50 Megawatts Solar Plant Underway

Story by: Apibiri Major

A 100 acres of land has been secured in Saka/Zeogo, a suburb of Zebilla in the Bawku West District to establish a 50 Megawatts Solar Plant. The solar plant, according to experts, will produce electricity for twenty-five years to supply Northern Ghana and it's neighbouring countries.

The project, when completed, will  help reduce the cost that dry season farmers bear in purchasing power in order to enable them to use their generators to pump water to their crops.

In an interview with the National Coordinator for Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small Scale Mining Project, Dr. John Kingsley Krugu indicated that a good deal has been negotiated for the people in the area. He further added that an amount of GHc250,000.00 will be paid upfront to land owners before the commencement of work on the facility and GHc100,000.00 will be paid yearly to land owners with the aim of boosting their economic life.

The project, which is financed by Total Energies, will create over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs and, therefore, will open up the socio-economic activities of the Bawku West District and its adjoining districts.

Dr. Krugu disclosed that zoning status has been obtained from the Bawku West District Assembly and therefore hinted that experts and the technical team responsible for the construction of the facility will soon hit the ground.

He further added that the power generated will be connected to the national grid through GriDco transmission lines.

Dr. Krugu, a potential Parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Zebilla Constituency indicated that schools, roads, boreholes and health centres will be build in the community by Total Energies as their corporate social responsibility to the Bawku West District, especially the Saka and Zeogo communities.

People in the Saka community could not hide their joy about the project and therefore praised Dr. John Kingsley Krugu for his great initiative.
