Story by:Apibiri Major

The family of the young man  who was mistakenly killed by Police  at Kpatia in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region, in connection with the gruesome murder of some two police officers at Zuruangu, have called on government and human rights activists to help find justice for their deceased relative, Laayaame Simon Yindoog.

The spokesperson for the family,  Nawaak Moses Kolog wonders why the Police after arresting harmless Laayaame Simon Yindoog at a drinking spot could not intoregate him but rather resorted to shooting.

He further added that the Police after their thorough investigation found out that they have killed an innocent person and therefore promised to adequately compensate the family as well as foot the bill of all the funeral expenses.

He further disclosed that upon going to the mortuary to pick up the body of their late relative on June 2nd 2023, the family was asked to pay  over GHc 37, 000.00, instead of directing that Ghana Police Service, which deposited the body there.

Mr Nawaak added that the Police Administration through Tongo Ranna and the Assembly Member for Sheega Electoral Area gave the family an amount of 150, 000.00 Ghana cedis which can not cater for the deceased three wives and eight children who are all below eleven years.

Available information from Earl International, a mining company in the Talensi District where the deceased was an employee revealed that he was at work at the time the two police officers were shot dead at Zuruangu by armed robbers,  hence the urgent need for the deceased family to be properly compensated  by the police for their unprofessional behavior.

Mr Nawaak indicated that it was agreed that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) will send a delegation to commiserate with the family as well as recruit two people from the deceased's family into the police service, which has not yielded any results. He is also of the view that the police officer who committed this heinous act should be punish to serve as a deterrent to others.

Mr Augustine Guure, a native of Sheaga on his part indicated that the manner in which compensation monies were  given to the deceased family is unquestionable because documents pertaining to it are not properly stamped and therefore reiterated that such huge amount of money can not be released from any outfit without proper endorsement.

He further added that for the Police to kill a 34 year old man with a large family without showing remorse is a great worry and therefore the need for justice to be served to the family.

Mr Guure also added that leaders who should have fought for the family of the deceased are rather in bed with the perpetrators of the crime hence the need for all and sundry to rally behind the family in finding justice for them. He indicated that the failure of the Police Administration to attend the burial service of Laayaame Simon Yindoog is worrisome to the family as well as the entire community hence the need for Ghanaians and human rights activists to help find justice for the family.

The three widows of the deceased clad in red attire who could not control their tears appealed to all and sundry to rally behind the family in this case.
